CBV (Chartered Business Valuator)
A Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) is a professional credentialed by the CBV Institute (formerly the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators) who specializes in the valuation of businesses, securities, and intangible assets. The CBV designation is recognized as the standard credential for business valuation in Canada.
CBVs are engaged for formal valuation opinions in business sales, shareholder disputes, estate planning, divorce proceedings, and tax compliance. A formal CBV valuation report carries significant weight with the Canada Revenue Agency, courts, and counterparties in a transaction because it follows CBV Institute Practice Standards.
For business sales where the seller plans to claim the Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption (LCGE), a CBV valuation provides stronger defensibility in a CRA audit than an informal broker opinion of value.
